Faculty of Engineering and Technology

The Faulty of Engineering and Technology was launched in 2014 following the merger between the faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Information Technology. Since their establishment in 1979 and 2006, respectively, the two faculties have educated cohorts of engineers and professionals in different engineering disciplines and computer science, and have continuously upgraded their curricula and academic programs to keep abreast of new knowledge and technology and to encourage excellence and creativity amongst their faculty members and students.

The Faculty of Engineering and Technology comprises of the following 5 academic departments and one institute:

  • Department of Civil Engineering
  • Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics
  • Department of Architectural Engineering
  • Department of Electrical engineering and Computer Engineering
  • Department of Computer Science
  • Ibn Sina Institute for Knowledge Engineering & Arabic Technologies

Mission Statement

The faculty strives to provide its students with an effective learning environment, enriched by basic and applied research of relevance to contemporary local and global issues and in cooperation with the industry and academic and professional institutions that enables graduates to actively engage in the professional practice and advance their careers through lifelong learning.

The faculty plays a pivotal role in developing knowledge and competencies in engineering and technology by preparing qualified graduates capable of advancing the profession and serving the community.

Undergraduate Programs

The Faculty offers 6 academic programs leading to bachelor degrees in Engineering with a study period of 5 years. All programs offer a general track as well as a number of concentration areas in the disciplines which students may opt to join in their final academic year to enhance their competitiveness for professional careers and academic spheres. All programs have integrated internships as part of their graduation requirements. The 5-year programs include Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Architectural Engineering, Electrical engineering and Computer Engineering. In addition, the Faculty offers a four-year academic program leading to a bachelor degree in Computer Science. Admission requirements are based on student achievements in Tawjihi or its equivalence and are published by the university at the beginning of each academic year. Students should apply for direct admission to the following academic programs: mechatronics, computer engineering, and computer science. For all other programs, students may apply directly to the academic program of their choice or apply for general admission to the Faculty and shall then compete for specialization pending their fulfillment of the minimum requirements for each academic program as published by the relevant department.

Graduate ProgramsThe Faculty offers two academic programs leading to master degrees with minimum study period of 2 years as thesis or non-thesis tracks in Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture, and Computing. In addition, the Faculty is actively involved in the delivery of the master program in Water and Environmental Engineering offered by the Faculty of Graduate studies.

Research Areas

  • Mechatronics Engineering: modeling and controlling of electro-hydraulic system and inverted pendulum, energy saving using control of redundant samara robot, vibration  isolation in MRT system, and active control of solar PV panels.
  • Computer Systems Engineering: mobile applications, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, and digital image processing.
  • Architectural Engineering: architectural design, interior design, urban planning, landscape architecture, and cultural heritage.
  • Civil Engineering: structures, transportation and traffic engineering, water and environmental engineering, construction materials and material testing, and construction management.
  • Electrical Engineering: communications, power and control, computer systems, and renewable energy.
  • Mechanical Engineering: energy efficiency, renewable energy, control and robotics, mechatronic systems, and machine design.
  • Computer Science: computer and network security, artificial intelligence, knowledge engineering, databases, data mining, software engineering, human-computer interaction, operations research.

External Relations and Cooperation

The Faculty has strong ties with local organizations and companies forged by cooperation agreements and joint activities. The Faculty has advisory boards comprised of established engineers and professionals that contribute to its overall development and outreach. In addition, the Faculty maintains good working relations with international universities and works closely with its partners in seeking external funding for joint projects.
The Faculty has recently secured funding for three projects jointly with local, regional and European universities to develop master programs in “Software Engineering”, “Sustainable Engineering” and “Electrical Engineering”. All three projects are currently under implementation.

Available facilities extend over Omar Al-Aqqad Building and Munib Al-Masri Building which include classrooms, lecture theatres, laboratories, workshops, drawing studios and computer laboratories.
