BZU President, Dr. Khalil Hindi, stated that society’s progress is measured by the status of women and the extent to which their rights are safeguarded. He referred to the role of Palestinian women in the Palestinian national struggle. He also applauded detainee Hana’ Shalabi, who is currently on an open hunger strike in an Israeli prison, in protest against her administrative detention.

This came during an honorary ceremony on 13 March 2012 for BZU women faculty and staff members, held by the BZU Union of Teachers and Employees on the occasion of International Women's Day. The event was sponsored by the Palestinian Cellular Communication Company “Jawwal” and Sbitany Company.

Dr. Hindi noted that 60% of BZU students are women and valued the vital role of the women faculty and staff in political, academic, social and union work.

Head of the Union, Ms. Eileen Kuttab, asserted that women must be given the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities, underscoring Hana’ Shalabi’s determination to resist her unfair administrative detention.

In concurrence with the occasion, former Head of the Union, Mr. Sami Shaath, was honored for his contributions to the Union. Also, women faculty and staff members who have completed 30 years of service were honored: Diana Muhawi, Tagreed Shehadeh and Dolly Kaibni.
