The Board of Trustees announced on Monday, November 2, 2015 that Hanan Ashrawi and Mazen Darwazah have been added to its ranks. Board chairman Hanna Nasir said that their contributions will be a valuable addition.

Ashrawi is a Palestinian politician and academic who has held numerous academic and political appointments. She became a member of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s Executive Committee in 2009 and chaired its culture and media department.

Heading Birzeit University’s Legal Aid and Human Rights committee between 1974 and 1995, Ashrawi has dedicated much of her life to Palestinian civil society. She contributed to the establishment of and later headed the university’s English Literature department and was also appointed as the dean of the Art Faculty from 1986 until 1996.

Ashrawi is also an active political force internationally and locally. Aside from her many other activities, she serves as board chair at Miftah, the Palestinian Initiative for the promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy.

Darwazah is a former member of the Jordanian Senate who served from 2010 to 2013. He is currently head of Hikma Pharmaceuticals in Jordan and chairs a number of companies, most notably Trust Pharma Algeria Ltd, Pharma Elie Ltd Sudan and the Jordan International Insurance Company.

Darwazah is also a board member for a number of other pharmaceutical companies including Pharma Egypt, Ibn Al Bitar Tunis, Hikma Lebanon and Promopharm Morocco. He obtained a BA in business management from Beirut University College, a diploma in marketing in Boston in the United States and a senior management diploma in France.

He is an advisory member to the board of the Lebanese American University and the Buck Institute for Research on Aging in San Francisco and a member of the Yarmouk University board of trustees.

Darwazah recently visited Birzeit University to inaugurate Samih Darwazah Pharmaceuticals, which was established with a generous donation from his late father Samih Darwazah, who was also a member of the university’s board of trustees until he passed away on April 15, 2015.
