Gender Committee Holds its First Meeting

The Gender Committee, created by the National Initiative for Media Development led by the Birzeit University Media Development Center, held its first meeting on December 1, 2014 with the participation of several member women’s institutions.

The committee agreed at the meeting to formulate common ground for the committee’s work in order to ensure that the Palestinian Media Initiative fully integrates gender standards.The committee has decided to guide its members to join other National Initiative committees in order to ensure gender-sensitive standards within Palestinian media development discussions. Participants in the meeting emphasized the need to expedite the joint action in order to draft a special course on media and gender that will be adopted by media departments in Palestinian universities.The Birzeit University center launched the activities of the National Initiative for Palestinian Media Development in partnership with a national team that is composed of 45 national institutions, and funded by the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA).

The initiative consists of nine main components: legal reform of media, academic development of media specializations, media training, public media, media and society, occupational safety, media and gender, Palestinian media infrastructure and self-regulation of the Palestinian media.
