The Ministry of Culture and Birzeit University, in particular its Media Department, will sponsor a joint conference on March 15-16, 2016 on critical issues facing the cultural media in Palestine.

“We are extremely pleased to cooperate with the Ministry of Culture, as we believe in the role of culture in raising an educated generation that is capable of benefitting its country,” said University President Abdel Latif Abu Hijleh. He said that the conference would be “a major step towards encouraging the media industry to participate in highlighting cultural activities. The university believes that its success will be instrumental in strengthening the collaboration and cultural communication between intellectuals and the public.”

Minister of Culture Ehab Bessaiso and President Abu Hijleh signed the agreement . The ceremony was attended by Vice President for Academic Affairs Henry Giacaman, Vice President for Development and Communication Ghassan Khatib, External Academic Relations Officer Dolly Kaibni-Nammour and Media Department head Bassam Ewaida.

Bessaiso expressed his enthusiasm about the upcoming conference. “Media is a mediator between culture and society development,” he said. “We need to multiply our efforts and organize roundtables, conferences and other activities, in order to share ideas and experiences and find ways to enhance the cultural structure in Palestine and better convey cultural productions to the public through media.”

Ewaida said that the conference will carry on the Media Department’s vision to strengthen a regular mechanism for educating students in the important role of media in reinforcing cultural activities and production arts and literature. “We are hoping to nurture the curricula that we teach in the department and accelerate steps to educate the best journalists, those aware of the role of culture and contemporary issues, trends and events, and the impact they can make with their knowledge of society”.
