Birzeit University Community and Workers’ Union celebrated International Women’s Day, held annually on March 8, commemorating the achievements of women in Palestine and throughout the world.

Palestinian hunger striker Mohammad Al-Qiq’s wife and mother of the teen Laith Al-Khaldi, who succumbed to injuries sustained during clashes with the Israeli occupation, were honored during the festivities.

“Palestinian women continue to make significant in-roads and contributions in education, politics, culture, the public service and other arenas. This day, however, brings us the opportunity to reflect on how far we have come and how much farther we have to go,” Assistant to the Dean Basma Al Omari told the audience on behalf of the university administration.

Union member Laila Dabit also addressed the crowd. “On Women’s Day, we celebrate Palestine’s women and recognize their extraordinary achievements through the history of Palestine,” she said. “We, as women, should be proud of ourselves. We lead, inspire and work to improve our communities. Our contributions must be recognized and we must reflect on what else needs to be done to empower over half of the world’s population.”

“We also remember today women’s suffering, hardship and injustice,” Dabit continued, “which for many is still a reality today. It is true that we must work to protect women and compel the Israeli occupation to respect women’s rights using the principals of international humanitarian and human rights law, not just today but every day.”

Dabit encouraged young women to make the most of their university education and aimed to inspire them to always keep reaching for their goals and life aspirations.

The celebration was sponsored by Sbitany Home and the company’s sales manager was honored during the event.
