An understanding of cellular recognition of misfolded proteins was presented in a lecture given on March 19, 2016 by University of British Columbia associate professor Thibault Mayor.

Organized by the Department of Biology and Biochemistry, the lecture "Kiss of Death with Ubiquitin to Eliminate Unwanted Proteins” discussed how protein homeostasis is maintained in the cell to avoid the accumulation of misfolded polypeptides and their aggregation, which has been associated with aging, as well as many neurodegenerative diseases.

"Our fundamental work provides a common framework to better understand the targeting of misfolded polypeptides by quality control pathways that play a major role in protein homeostasis," Mayor stated.
