Ramallah and Al-Bireh governor Laila Ghannam visited university president Abdel Latif Abu Hijleh in a  ceremony to honor Birzeit University for ranking first among Palestinian universities in the Webometrics ranking.

“It is not surprising to see Birzeit on the top. This accomplishment, as well as others, should be a source of pride for all of us,” Ghannam said. “Coming in first among Palestinian universities and thirty-first among higher education institutions in the Arab world, in an international scale, reflects the university’s inspiring leadership, its strategic vision and its profound commitment to higher-education and public service.”

The celebration was attended by Ramallah mayor Mousa Hadid, Beitunia mayor Ribhi Dola, governorate Chamber of Commerce president Khalil Rizek, Directorate of Education in Ramallah and Al-Bireh head Bassem Eriqat and a number of other representatives from Al-Bireh Municipality and other local entities.

“Education is the most powerful investment in our future,” Ghannam told attendees. “It can put people on a path towards empowerment and employment, and help us to build a solid state. Therefore, we are keen at the Governorate of Ramallah and Al-Bireh and all relevant public and private entities on enhancing the education and higher education system, as we believe that the more we invest in education, the greater the returns we will harvest in economic, social and political terms.”

University president Abdel Latif Abu Hijleh credited the accomplishment to the university’s hard work and investment in research, innovation and scientific advancement. “With every step we take,” he said, “we pursue excellence in teaching and research. We always aim high, and have faith in our graduates, who will work towards the development of our country.”

Birzeit University learned this month that it ranked first among Palestinian universities and thirty-first among approximately1,000 higher education institutions in the Arab world in the Webometrics Ranking.
