Founder of the Free Software Foundation, Richard Stallman, visited BZU on 16 July 2011, and delivered a lecture entitled "Free Software and Your Freedom." The lecture was attended by the Palestinian Minister of Communications, Dr. Mashour Abu Daqqa, and a number of BZU faculty and staff.

Stallman applauded the development of the free software community in Palestine, emphasizing the importance of freedom as a basic option for the Palestinian community in dealing with the Internet and software. Stallman added: “The world of software and applications that we use in our everyday lives is divided into two, that of closed source applications, which the user can not use without knowing how it works. This type is common among the majority of computer users. And then there is the world of open free source software and applications, which enables the user to develop it, and deal with it as a source of knowledge that can be built upon, re-published and used for the benefit of knowledge development.”
